Milky Way (wide field)

Last weekend was my first opportunity in almost two months to visit dark skies and shoot a few astrophotographs. Conditions were perfect with a nice cool (4 degrees C) night, with slight winds and low humidity. It is a nice time of year in the Western Australian Wheatbelt region.

This is the main photograph I ended up with from the night. It features the centre of the Milky Way which was directly overhead at the time, a wonderful time of year to be outside at night looking up!

This is probably the best photograph I have taken of this area of the Milky Way, definitely at such a wide field of view. Taken with the Canon 8-15mm fisheye on my 7D it is a very wide field of view indeed. You wouldn't know it from the end result but the left hand side was almost at the south-east horizon, and the right hand side is not far off the north-west horizon.
